How do I know if my electrical wiring is up to date?

What year was your home/building built? How long have you owned it? Just because a home or other building was built with a certain wiring type, doesn’t mean the system hasn’t been modernized, undergone partial upgrades or been replace completely. The best way to conclusively identify your wiring system is through a thorough inspection.

What does it mean to upgrade my electrical service/panel?

This means that you are able to bring more power into your home. Many older homes were built with 60-100 amps of power. At that time, that amount of power was sufficient to meet the electrical needs of those homes. But with modern dishwashers, hair dryers, flat screen tvs, microwaves, and all the electrical devices we’ve come to depend on nowadays, 60 or 100 amps is no longer sufficient to support many home’s electric needs. Upgrading your panel will bring enough power into your home to meet your modern power needs.

When is it time to call an electrician?

When you are resetting circuit breakers or changing fuses too often. When you turn on your hair dryer and the lights dim in the room. When your lights flicker or go on and off. When you can smell electricity burning. When you have six electronic devices going into one outlet in back of your electronics center. When you have receptacle outlets overburdened by multi-plug strips. When a three-prong plug needs a two-prong adapter. If you have to run extension cords to plug in electrical devices across a room.
u

How much will my electrical work cost? Do you provide phone estimates?

We’re always glad to provide a general estimate for an electrical job over the phone. However, for a precise quote, we need to do an onsite inspection. Depending on the size and complexity of a job, the cost of electrical work can be affected by numerous factors. All Avila Electric estimates are free and we will never pressure you into making a purchase or signing a contract.

Why do I keep blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers?

Are you “overloading” a receptacle, surge strip, or extension cord by plugging in too many things? Usually, the cause is too many appliances or other heavy-use devices. Refrigerators, microwave ovens, stoves, air conditioners, plugin heaters and toasters are notorious for causing this problem. However, continually blown fuses or tripped breakers could signify a more serious issue.

What is a GFCI outlet?

This type of electrical outlet is designed to protect you from electrical shock in bathrooms, near kitchen sinks, outdoor outlets, garages, or anywhere that moisture could be present. They feature test/reset buttons. Depress the “test” button to turn off the GFCI protection. The “reset” button turns it back on after it has tripped. If it doesn’t reset, you’ve got a problem and will need to call us.
